The Bastard Series of Functional Knives ©, are handmade functional knives, developed over a period of 25+ years and based on operational field experiences with feed-back from professionals and sportsmen alike. Professionals in the field have long expressed the need for a knife which would effectively take the place of several knives and/or tools, while exceeding the extreme demands in the areas of field service, edge holding capability, durability and overall performance. The result is a unique, elegant solution, a tool capable of performing under the most adverse conditions. (While no knife should be used as a crowbar, we all know there are situations where the only tools we have are the tools we carry.) Further, in keeping with company goals, every single component part of the Bastard Series is made in the USA. Every Born In Fire knife carries a life-time warranty against failure in the field. If the knife fails under use, the user only has to return the knife to the company, along with a letter of explanation, a story if you will, and the knife will be repaired or replaced.
The Bastard Series of Functional Knives ©, are created from ¼ inch thick 1095, hot rolled steel, made in the USA. This is the same steel used for close to a century in the U.S. Marine Corp Bowie, dozer blades and tank treads. The edge holding ability of 1095 in a properly crafted and treated knife is still on par with so-called ultramodern, 'super steels'.This design has three distinct cutting edges set at 20, 25 and 30+ degrees. Note: The edge is also cut in the ‘apple seed’ edge, the same used most commonly in cutting competitions. The blade is differentially tempered, creating three zones, the first is a tough, super hard, cutting edge, and the center is a spring temper, while the spine of the blade is intentionally left soft. Under the Cerakote weapon’s grade ceramic finish is a distinct temper line. Please note that the spine of the blade is gently rounded, while the blade clip remains flat. This feature, when combined with the true convex ground, tan-to point, creates the best geometry for maximum material penetration.
The Bastard Series of Functional Knives ©, is unique for many reasons, starting with the tampered, compound hollow grind running the length of the blade. To the best of our knowledge, this feature has never been attempted in a knife before. This creates a system to the blade, starting with a deep hollow grind with a thin edge near the guard, and allowing for more weight and a thicker edge in front. This feature also allows for greater weight toward the tip of the knife, while maintaining a perfect overall balance.
The cross guard is produced from a single piece of structural steel, tapped into place and secured with two tool steel pins and the same structural adhesive used to hold assault helicopter rotor blades together. (A note to our friends in the infantry; Yes, the blade catch feature of the guard works nicely as a bottle opener.) This design has two strike points, one at the base of the cross guard and the other at the butt of the knife. Among other things, this feature allows the knife to be used safely to remove the glass from a automobiles window in order to rescue a trapped occupant. The butt strike point has been tempered for durability. The G-10 grip panels have heavy, full depth, ten lines per inch checkering. Stainless steel, 1911 Torx, low profile grip screws and bushings are used to hold the panels in place. Note that these screws are commonly available throughout the USA and overseas. Even if all four screws were lost, the panels set over the bushings and could be held solidly in place with adhesive tape in an emergency.
For professionals, the use of Cerakote, a baked ceramic epoxy finish, speaks for itself. Current laboratory tests results show that nothing currently comes close to this tough protective finish against rust, salt corrosion or wear. For now, and in staying with the philosophies of Henry Ford, the buyer can pick from any of Cerakote’s wide range of colors, as long as it is either Armorer’s Black or Coyote Tan. Each knife is hand engraved with the company logo, maker's mark and serial number.
